Transitions are applied to the ends of clips       Filters are applied to contents of clips

Drag filters from Effects  -or- Double-click to Viewer; Effects > Video Filters > choose filter

Filters have various parameters that can be changed

Filters that are applied to clips are listed in Viewer – Filters tab

First filter applied appears at the top

Additional filters provide a cumulative effect

Drag around to change order – play with Kaldioscope and Kaldiotile

To remove a filter – click name to delete –or- CTRL-click, choose cut

To remove all – click Video Filters, delete

Use Quick View:  Tools > QuickView   -or- Option 8  to preview.  

            Mark I/O to play repeatedly

To delete filters - 

CTRL-click name in the Viewer, Filters Tab; press delete

CTRL-click filter name; choose cut

To delete all filters - 

Click "Video Filters" - All are highlighted; press delete

Paste Attributes let's you copy filters (and other info) to other clips

Command C to copy from source clip

CTRL-click, select "Paste Attributes" -or- Option V

Audio Filters

Gain filter can go much louder than sliders

Reverb filter to make audio sound like a stadium (several presets)

If audio render line - go to User Prefs (Option Q) - to raise Real Time Audio Mixing

To save favorite filters:

Drag filter to Favorites in Effects bin in Browser

Choose clip with effect; then Effects -> Make Favorite

Option F

 

Color Correction 

     Video, like light, is additive color - all colors together make white

     Paint and ink are subtractive color - all colors together make black

White Balance - setting "what is white" for a particular lighting condition

Hue - color itself from 0 to 360 on a color wheel.  R=0; G=120; B=240

Saturation - amount of color or chroma

0%=white; 50%, color+gray or subdued; 100% fully saturated

Brightness - also called luminance

0% is black; 100% is brightest

Effects -> Video Filters -> Image Control for a variety of enhancement filters

Effects -> Video Filters -> Color Correction for a variety of color correction filters

Good idea to practice with and understand the basic Color Corrector before going to the 3-way Color Corrector

 

3-Way Color Corrector 

   defaults to  numeric display (relatively useless!)

   visual display is more intuitive.

Three wheels - Blacks, Mids, Whites

Boosting Mids can brighten an image without losing black/white

Eye dropper to set new white point (white button to reset)

Toggle before/after with check mark in Eye icon (notice keyframe button)

Frame Viewer - Tools -> Frame Viewer  -or- Option 7

Popups at bottom left and right to set Current Frame and Current w/o Filters

V-Split     Swap     H-Split

Animating Filters

   Apply filter and animate with keyframe in Viewer

Drag lower right to open Keyframe Graph area

Set keyframe with keyframe button (diamond); Move keyframe by dragging

     Once one keyframe is set, others will be set automatically if that parameter is changed

   Animate with Blade tool and Transitions

   Blade a clip and apply filter to one part

Use Transition - Cross Dissolve to animate

Mask -

Use Video Generator for Color

Select Color clip and apply Video Filters ->Matte -> Mask Shape

Change aspect ratio and style; Invert to make it a border
