Lesson 8
Connect capture device via 4, 6, or 9 pin Firewire       Camera in VTR mode  
Sequence settings should match majority of footage
 
Final Cut Pro > Easy Setup   -or-  Control Q        
      Filter by format and rate to reduce options
File > New Project with current Easy Setup   
     Name and save immediately to set capture destination  
          File> Save As  -or-  Shift Command S
 
Control camera in FCP or as non-controllable device for A/D (analog to digital) convertors
Open Log and Capture   File > Log and Capture  -or-  Command 8 
Preview window (similar to Viewer and Canvas)
       Available space and approximate recording time
       Timecode for duration and current position
       Transport controls and shuttle and jog
       Mark I and Mark O buttons

Device Control Status – VTR OK or Non-Controllable Device
       Play/Stop (once to pause, twice to stop tape) or Space or JKL  or Shuttle or Jog

Marking Source Material – Same as marking clips but leave generous handles for padding
      You can set points tight and the -3. at I to add 3 seconds to front; 3. at O to add 3 sec. to end
       Go to I; go to O buttons or Shift I/O to see marks'

Logging clips – fields match some in Browser columns

Log Bin – only one active at a time  - look for slate icon and name on Log Bin button

Logging Tab – you cannot click in the name field
          Name is autogenerated based on checked fields
          click slate icon next to field to increment or change manually
          Add markers (click disclosure triangle)
                  set I (O to give marker a duration) and name it
                 Timecode and name appear in Marker In Point Timecode Box

Clip Setting Tab – Select to capture just A, just V or both
                           Toggle Stereo/Mono   Stereo – paired    Mono- unpaired, useful for multiple mics
                           Click Preview box to listen while capturing
                           Click Video Scopes – but you cannot change settings there

Capture Settings Tab – Defaults to Easy Setup preset but you can override that
            Device Control – how/if deck is controlled
            Capture/Input – selects capture codec (Offline RT for lower quality caputre – recap later)
            Scratch Disks – selects destination – shows free space and approx time
                 Default – MacHD>Users>username>Documents>FCP Documents
                         These settings are also available  Final Cut Pro > System Settings  -or -  Shift Q
                         Audio/Video Settings are at Final Cut Pro > Audio/Video Setting  -or-  Cmd Shift Q

Capture Options – 3 options –-- Clip  -  Now  -  Batch  ---- Log Clip builds a list to Batch capture
            Clip – stop/start process – Mark, Log, Capture a single clip – repeat process
            Now – used for non-controllable device – or whole tape
                      Set a capture limit in Scratch Disk window to automatically stop
                      If DV footage with start/stop – capture all, open Viewer, Mark > DV Start/Stop Detect
            Batch – Log multiple clips first with Log Clip or F2
                       Logged clips will appear in Browser with Offline red slash
                       To change info before capture, select in Browser, Modify > Clip Setting
                      When done logging – click Batch
                             Batch Capture dialog window will open
                                    Capture – All, Offline, or Selected Items in Logging Bin
                                    Options – Use Logged clip Setting – Add Handles
                                    Capture Preset – from Easy Setup or change it

Set Capture Preferences in User Preferences > General tab  -or-  Option Q
 
Use Log and Transfer rather than Log and Capture to ingest tapeless formats like P2 cards
