Lesson 7
Reconnecting Media that has gone Offline - 3 things happen:
Offline warning Window appears,
Clips have red line through them in the Browser,
Media Offline image appears in Timeline
Offline Window options
Select check boxes in Forget Files if you know these files are not used
Otherwise, choose Reconnect
Search Single Location - if you know where the files are
Locate - to look for the files manually
Search - to have the computer look for the files (slow)
File Attribute Mismatch warning if something has changed. Errors are listed, name is italic
Playing multiple formats – HDV, DV, HD, SD, etc.
Item Properties – CTRL-click clip and select Item Properties -or- Command 9
Format tab – information on compressor, video rate, frame size, pixel aspect ratio, etc
Also Timing tab, Logging tab, Film tab
Sequence Properties - Sequence > Settings -or- Command 0
Gives similar information about the entire Sequence
Clips can have different formats than the Sequence they are in.
Access Clip's Item Properties: CTRL-click clip in Timeline or Browser -or- Command 9
Sequence Settings –change existing clips – Command 0
Changes settings for NEW sequences in User Preferences – Timeline Options
Master Clips – first use of a clip in a Project. Supervise naming
Subsequent uses of clips, even in other Projects, are Affiliate clips
Sequence clip in Time line is an Affiliate of Master clip in Browser
Rename Master clip and Affiliate will change too but Subclips will not change name
How to find Master clip:
Highlight clip, View > Reveal Master Clip -or- Shift F to show Master clip in Browser
Highlight clip, View > Reveal in Finder to show Master clip on hard drive. Works for subclips too
Import Master clip if it is not in a project or import all Master clips: Tools > Create Master Clips
Match Frame – if/where a frame is in a Sequence
Open clip in View, navigate to desired frame, click F -or- View > Match Frame > Master Clip
--OR--
Find position in Timeline, click F, clip opens in Viewer
Logging information in Browser Columns – over 60 fields
Click column name to sort by, sorting name is lighter
CTRL-click column to: add hidden column to left; hide column; reset to standard or logging
Finding and Labeling Project Items
In Broswer gray area, Command F -or- Edit > Find
Find Window appears. Find Next or Find All (new window opens with all returns)
In Timeline, not as complicated an interface, clips are highlighted in Timeline
Color code clips by selecting clip, CTRL-click and choose label
Customizing Keyboard Shortcuts
Tools > Keyboard Layout > Customize -or- Option H
Must unlock layout first, you can reset here as well
First 9 items in list are Menu commands
Tabs across top are for keys and modifier key combinations
Choose tab, drag function from list to key
New keyboard shortcuts appear in menus like the standard ones do
Customizing Button Bars
Can add to Browser, Viewer, Canvas or Timeline (already 2 buttons here)
Search for commands in Button List or keyboard Layout
Drag icon to desired Button Bar (upper right), Tool tip shows on hover
Custom Layouts are saved:
Mac HD > Users > {username} > Library > Preferences > Final Cut Pro User Data
To save:
Browser layout – CTRL-click column name, choose Save Column Layout
Window layout – Recall it if closed with Shift or Option U
Choose Window > Arrange Save Window Layout
Timeline layout – For custom track heights, waveforms and overlays on
Choose Timeline Layout pop-up, Select, Save Track Layout
Button bar – CTRL-click button bar, Choose Save All Button Bars
To restore to no button bars, CTRL-click Timeline button bar
To remove individual buttons, Drag off bar and poof!
Keyboard layout – Tools > Keyboard layout > save Keyboard layout
-or- CTRL-click in a Button bar
Copy the Final Cut Pro User Data folder and paste it to use custom layouts on different computers
Optimizing User Preferences (6 tabs) – Option Q -or- Final Cut Pro > User Preferences
General – Levels of undo, list recent clips, auto save vault
Editing – Still/Freeze duration, pre/post roll, multiframe trim size (for shift [ ] or < > trims)
Labels – Change field names for color coding but NOT colors
Timeline Options – Sets options for FUTURE Sequences, default number of tracks
Render Control – Set processor intensive effects
Audio Outputs – up to 24 distinctive tracks if your hardware supports them
To revert User Prefs you must trash the prefs – Final Cut Pro 6 Preferences in FCP User Data folder
